Who funds us
The Digital Economy Programme
HighWire is funded by the Research Council's UK (RCUK) Digital Economy Theme, which intends to support research to rapidly realise the transformational impact of digital technologies on aspects of community life, cultural experiences, future society, and the economy.
They are bringing together a unique community of researchers (from diverse disciplines including social science, engineering, computer science, the arts and medical research) and users (individuals, businesses, government) to study, understand and find approaches to real-world problems. EPSRC leads the RCUK Digital Economy Theme on behalf of Research Councils UK. Since its inception in 2008 the RCUK Digital Economy Theme has invested £138m in:
- Building the capacity and expertise needed to realise the Digital Economy through three Digital Economy Research Hubs.
- Training a new generation of digital economy researchers through their seven Centres for Doctoral Training, including HighWire.
Digital Economy Impact Review
EPSRC, on behalf of the UK Research Councils, conducted a review of the impact of RCUK-supported digital economy research in May 2012. The review focused on the entire Research Councils’ digital economy portfolio, not just on the research and training supported by the RCUK Digital Economy Theme.
The review concluded that the Digital Economy theme is well positioned for success, and is a template for how the Research Councils should go about directed strategic research with strong user engagement.
